Lake Chilengwa
The Copperbelt is home to a number of sunken lakes. Each with their own landscapes, colours and stories but the same geological phenomena. Lake Chilengwa is truly untouched nature, 20 minutes from Ndola city! And a natural mystery as its name indicates. It is also famously known as "Chilengwa na Lesa" translating (Created by God). The Lake was formed as a result of rock collapsing into a large underground cavern in the underlying limestone. The sides of the lake are steep and sloppy but there are walking trails that lead down to the water level for those adventure seekers.
There is said to be a mermaid that lives in Lake Chilengwa, although no one has ever reported seeing it, there were plenty of movements in the water including 3 heads poking up while swimming, thought to be monitor lizards…
There are more myths and legends of the mermaid pulling people under. Some say if you shoot a bullet across the lake, it will
be pulled down as it flies over the middle and will therefore not cross!
Lake Chilengwa is an ideal location for Bird watching and Picnics, Camping is also recommended.
